Hawarden Independent Sept 22, 1983

Muriel Esser, 79, of Hawarden, retired school teacher, died Wednesday, September14,1983, in a Sioux City hospital after a long illness. Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturdayin St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden. The Rev. William Carel officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. The rosary was recited at 9 p.m. Friday in the Dow Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Alex Doohen, Taylor Flynn, Don Dowdey, Roger Falde, Harvey Pederson and Charles Mc Manaman.

Mrs. Esser, the former Muriel Kavanaugh, was born April 21, 1904, in Spink, SD. She graduated from Vermillion (SD) High School and graduated from Westmar College in Le Mars. She taught for several years in Westfield and also in the Hawarden public schools, retiring in 1968.

She married Vernon Esser in 1934 in Hawarden. He died in 1981. Mrs. Esser was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Guild and St. Teresa Circle. She was active in civic affairs in Hawarden, served a term as president of the Business and Professional Women and was an active member and past president of the Senior Citizens Organization.

Survivors include two sons, William of Ashland, OR, and Terry of Berkeley, CA,
and three grandchildren.
