George Huizenga

August 26, 1925 - June 28, 2014

Mr. George Huizenga, age 88, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2014, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City. There will be a funeral service on Thursday, July 3, at 10:00am, at the American Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Gary Hegstad will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. George was born on August 26, 1925, in Orange City, the son of Jacob and Agnes (De Vries) Huizenga. He was raised at Orange City. In 1943, he entered the United States Army, serving overseas. He was honorably discharged in 1946, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. On August 20, 1948, he married Thelma Jean Van Bruggen in Ireton. They made their home in Orange City, where he was employed at the Punt Chevrolet-Cadillac dealership, first as an automobile technician and then as their service manager. Later, George was the senior vice-president of Store Start-up for Hot Topic, where he managed new store openings, traveling to all 48 contiguous states. More recently, Mr. and Mrs. Huizenga resided at the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. Since October of 2013, they have lived at Prairie Ridge. He was a member of the American Reformed Church and the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post in Orange City. For many years, he was a volunteer fireman, some of them as chief, and he was a part-time policeman, all in Orange City. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing, and traveling. Survivors include his wife of more than 65 years, Jean; a daughter and her husband, LeAnn and Orval Madden, of Santa Barbara, California; a son and his wife, Jay and Jane Huizenga, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two granddaughters and their husbands, Jessica and Matthew Smith, of South Pasadena, California; and Megan and Matthew Sage, of Sioux Falls; three great-grandchildren; Jacob George Smith, Emmalyn Jane Sage, and Everett Matthew Sage; and two sisters-in-law, Joan (Huizenga) Spronk and Arlys Feenstra, both of Orange City. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister, Otto Huizenga, Ann Van Steenwyk, and Bernard Huizenga.
