Charlene Patricia "Pat” Groom. 67, of Ireton died Wednesday, October 27 at a Sioux City hospital. Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 30, at the United Methodist Church in Ireton with the Rev. Paul Hansen officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Ireton.

She was born December 3, 1926. In Seattle. Washington, the daughter of Dr. Charles Patrick and De Ette Walker Wade Jones. She lived in Washington, California, Connecticut, New York, Wisconsin. Minnesota and Iowa but spent her formative years near Warren, Connecticut. She graduated from high school in Belle Plaine, Minnesota, in 1943 and the University of Dubuque in Iowa in 1949. She took post-graduate work at Greeley, Colorado, and Westmar College.

She married Robert Groom November 20. 1948. in Lancaster, Wisconsin. She taught English at George and in 1953 moved to Ireton, where she also taught English. The couple started a newspaper, The Ireton Booster, and she served as news editor until they sold the paper in
J98J.

She was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1948 and 1949 and was Sioux County Homemaker in 1969. She was a member of Vesper Chapter Order of Eastern Star at Akron, serving as Worthy Matron for two years. She also was a member of PEO. She was an active member of the Ireton United Methodist Church, serving on the Memorial and Finance Committees, a member of Christian Social Involvement on the district level and secretary of the United Methodist Women. She was president of the UMW at the time of her death.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters and their husbands. Cindy and Lee R. Harry and Sandy and Randy Meeks all of Ireton; a sister De Ette Hawkins of Flint MI and four grandchildren She was preceded in death by her parents, and a son Robert Wake A memorial has been established In her name with the United Methodist Church in Ireton.
