Hawarden Independent of April 1, 1993

Nina F. Haines, age 94 of Hawarden, died Saturday, March 27, 1993, at the Hawarden Community Hospital. Services were held Wednesday, March 31, at the Associated Church in Hawarden, Rev. Fredrich Mellberg officiated. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation was at the Porter- Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden.

Mrs. Haines was born March 29, 1898, in Rock Valley, the daughter of Homer M. and Minnie Silver (Lee) Handy. She came to Hawarden with her family in 1912 and graduated from the Hawarden High School in 1915. Following graduation, she worked as a stenographer in a local law office until her marriage to Que W. Haines in Sioux City. He died May 31, 1962.

She lived most of her life in Hawarden and was an accomplished pianist, playing for the silent movies. Mrs. Haines was a longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, Norman Haines and his wife, Becky of Atlanta, Ga.; seven daughters, Beverly Van Buskirk of Sioux City, Arlene Case of Cove, Ore., Nina Montgomery of Atwater, Calf., Donna Peterson and her husband, Ray of Sioux City, Dolores Westcott and her husband, Rusty of Centerville, Carole Popken of Hawarden, and Barbara Schwartzmyer and her special friend, Bill Kelley of Hawarden; a brother, Fred Handy and his wife, Bonnie of Hawarden; 25 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Que Jr.; two brothers, Ted and Jack Handy; four sons-in-law, Larry Popken, Raymond Van Buskirk Sr., John Case and Cliff Montgomery; two great-grandchildren, Rae Therese Popken and Michael Logsdon; and a niece, Sharon Handy.
