Death of Old Resident

Benjamin Riegel, one of Reading ship's old-time residents, passed away at 5:80 Friday morning at the home o£ his daughter, Mrs. Philip Walker, three miles east of Ireton, at the age of 65 years and three months. He was stricken with paralysis about three weeks ago, and this with a complication of other diseases caused his death. The deceased was born Jan. 28, 1856 at Cowan, Union county, Pa. When a young man he came west with his parents who settled on a farm in Clayton county, Iowa, while he engaged in the mason’s trade. On Jan. 10, 1878, he was united in marriage with Miss Emilie Kukuk of Guttenburg, Iowa. To this union seven children were born, three sons and four daughters, all of whom survive their father. In the spring of 1884 he came to Sioux county with his family, making their home temporarily with his wife's sister, Mrs. Carl Hennrich, near Maurice. In the fall they moved onto a farm eight miles west of LeMars
where they remained until 1889 when they returned to Sioux county, taking charge of the home farm of Mrs. Riegel's parents, four miles southwest of Maurice. After twenty years of hard labor on the farm, and owing to Mr. Riegel's failing health caused by a paralytic stroke, they quit the farm and went to Brookings, S. D. They remained there only a short time and then found a more suitable home in one of Minnesota's garden spots, Eden valley. But, alas, they had hardly settled in the new home when the beloved wife was stricken, and following an operation passed away May 31, 1909. After this he lived alone, except occasional visits with his children. During the past winter he has been making his home here with his son Oscar and his daughter, Mrs. Philip Walker. During his recent illness he was given the most tender care by his children, all of whom had hastened to his bedside. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Nettie Stoll of Osceola, Wis.; Mrs. Alma Chenhall and Mrs. Cora Walker of Ireton; and Miss Linda Riegel of Oakland, Calif.; and three sons, Charles of Atwater, Minn.; and Oscar and Benjamin of Ireton. Funeral services, in charge of Rev. C. D. Nuoffer, pastor of St. John's Lutheran church, were held Monday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Walker, followed by a service at the church. Interment was made in St. John's cemetery. During his twenty years' sojourn in this community he was an ardent and consistent member of St. John's Lutheran church. He was held in high regard by all who knew him.
