Died: April 16, 2004 Primghar, Iowa

Gerrit J. De Vries, 98, Sanborn, died Friday April 16, 2004 at Primghar Care Center.

Services were Tuesday, April 20, at First Reformed Church in Sanborn, with the Rev. Dr. Gary Hegstad officiating. Burial was at Roseland Cemetery in Sanborn, under the direction of Sanborn Funeral Home.

Gerrit De Vries, son of Jacob and Mary (Drost) De Vries, was born June 17, 1905 in Hospers, Iowa. When he was 4, his family moved to a farm north of Sanborn. He received his education at a country school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Louise (Prins) Korthals on March 15, 1964, at First Reformed Church in Sanborn. He farmed until retiring in 1968. They built a home in Sanborn in 1968.

He was a charter member of First Reformed Church in Sanborn and member of Earl T. Conaway Post No. 418, Sanborn American Legion. Special insterests o f his include playing pool, working in his yard and fixing things. They enjoyed traveling and visited 46 states, Canada and Mexico.

Survivors include his wife, Louise De Vries of Sanborn; two stepsons, David and Donna Korthals of Mesa, AZ; and four step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brother Dick De Vries; and two sisters, Coba Krikke, and Lucy Baker.
