Hawarden Independent, March 25, 1920

Thomas Ausmussen, a former well known resident of this city, passed away last Thursday at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. August Tick, in Sioux City. While he has been in feeble health for a number of years, his immediate illness was only of a week or two duration. The remains were brought to Hawarden Saturday and funeral services were held at the Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. Geo. Steinkamp, and burial was made beside his wife in Grace Hill cemetery.

The deceased was born in Germany, Nov. 23, 1838, and so at the time of his death had attained the ripe old age of 81 years, 8 months and 25 days. He came to America in 1887 and followed his trade as a carpenter in Hawarden for a number of years. Following the death of his wife in 1914 he went to Sioux City where he has since made his home with his granddaughter. He is survived by three children, a step-son, A. F. Gefke of Hawarden, a daughter, Mrs. T. C. Iwers of Sioux City, and a son, Aus Ausmussen, who is still in Germany.
