Alberta "Bertie" Altena, 81, of Hawarden died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral service was Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Todd Bunge officiating. Burial was in the Valley View Cemetery at Rock Valley, Iowa. Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden was in charge of arrangements.

Bertie Altena, the youngest of nine children, was born April 30, 1921 in Chatsworth, Iowa to Richard and Gertrude (Haarsma) Timmer, She married Herbert Schmidt on Jan. 27, 1937 and they lived and farmed in the Rock Valley area. Mr. Schmidt died Sept. 29,1953. She married William Altena on Oct. 27, 1954. They made their home in Hawarden. Mr. Altena died Aug. 10, 1968.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden. She worked as a waitress for many years. Survivors include two daughters, Jean Hoffman of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Linda Miller of Akron; a son, Randy Altena, Craig, Missouri; five grandchildren; eight great-grand children;four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, enry "Hank" Timmer of Sioux Center; and a sister, Harriet Newman of Fort Dodge.
