Lula O. Smith, 103, of Hawarden, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center- in Hawarden. Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Tim Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden was in charge of arrangements.

Lula O. Smith was born Aug. 5, 1899 near Hudson, the daughter of Christian and Anna (Twedt) Nelson. She graduated from the Hawarden High School in 1919. Lula married Harold M. Smith Dec. 26,1919. They made their home in Hawarden, They began the Smith Electric, Plumbing and Heating in 1946, which Lula owned and managed until she retired at the age of 100. Harold died in October of 1981. Lula was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hawarden and the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Garden Club.

Survivors include a son, Bernard of Hawarden; two daughters, Beverly Holmdal and Margaret Lundeen, both of Alcester; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Lula was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Henry Holmdal and Lloyd Lundeen; a brother, Roy Nelson; a sister,
Idella Younie; and an infant granddaughter, Nancy Smith.
