Catharina Maria Sophia Smit, 88, of Hull died Tuesday, September 11, 2001, at Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday at the American Reformed Church in Hull with the Rev. Steven Bierly officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation will be after 2 P.M. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 P.M. at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Mrs. Smit was born July 9, 1913, in rural Rock Rapids, the daughter of George D. and Elizabeth S. (Hinsch) Drewes. She was raised in Rock Rapids and George, Iowa. She married Douwie Edward Smit on March 10, 1936, in Rock Rapids. They farmed at Hull for 23 years and then moved into Hull. He died February 8, 1990, in Sioux City.

“Kate” was confirmed on November 28, 1926, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids. She was currently a member of the American Reformed Church, where in earlier years, she participated in the women’s organizations and taught Sunday School and Bible School classes.

She enjoyed crocheting and gardening, especially caring for her flowers.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Eileen and Marvin Boon and Rosemary and Lester Harman, all of Hull; six grandchildren, Debra and her husband, Noel Davis Jr., Edna and her husband, Terry Lutzow, Marcia Green, Michael and his wife, Rebecca Harman, Steve Harman, and Stacey and her husband, Dennis Schmidt; nine great-grandchildren, Dayna, Keith and Brice Davis, Jermiah and Katrina Lutzow, Arieal and Brandon Green, Katlyn and Dylan Harman; two sisters, Marie Sprock of George, and Emma Lingbeck of Rothschild, Wisconsin; and two sisters-in-law, Gladys Drewes of Rock Rapids and Julia Smit Hofkamp of Sibley, Iowa.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Claus Drewes.

Memorials may be directed to the American to the American Reformed Church.
