John T. Smit, 86, of Hull, died Friday at a Rock Valley Hospital.

Services were Monday, June 8, at First Reformed Church in Hull with the Rev. Gerald Vander Velde officiating. Burial was in Hope Cemetery in Hull.

Smit was born October 28, 1900, in The Netherlands. He lived his youth there and came to the United States in 1911. He was educated in Orange City. He married Maggie Riemersma on January 30, 1925, at Newkirk. The couple lived near Hull and moved into town in 1953. He was a member of the First Reformed Church.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Anthony James of Doon, and Donald of Hull; three daughters, Marguerite Valentine of Lakewood, California, Julia Vander Ploeg of Sioux Center, and Andrianna Sneller of Kenneth, Minnesota; two sisters, Cobie Bouwman of Rock Rapids and Cornilia Dykhuizen of Demotte, Indiana; 20 grandchildren, and 36 great-grandchildren
