Gerrit G. Schouten, 74, of Hawarden, Iowa, died on Monday, September 8, 2008 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. Memorial Service will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday at the Christian Reformed Church in Hawarden with Rev. Tom Van Engen officiating. Committal service will begin at 10 A.M. at the church with the burial in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon on Thursday, with the family present from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. at the church. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family. Gerrit G. Schouten was born May 6, 1934 south of Hawarden, Iowa to Neal and Clara (Boerma) Schouten. He graduated from Hawarden High School in 1952 and served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956.

Gerrit married Joyce Landaal on January 11, 1957 in Ireton, Iowa. They farmed in the Hawarden area until he retired in 2001. They moved into Hawarden in 2004 and in November of 2007 he moved into Hillcrest Health Care Center.

Gerrit was a member of the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church where he served on various church councils and taught Sunday School. He enjoyed farming, watching sports on TV, and especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play in various sports.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; five children, Mike and his wife Pearl of Sioux Center, Randy and his wife Sharon of Hawarden, Doug and his wife Danyel of Hudson, South Dakota, Karlinda and her husband Bill Benda of Hawarden, and Rick and his wife Jill of Ireton; also a brother, Peter Schouten and his wife Chris of Sioux Center, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews.

Gerrit was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; and an infant son.
