Obituary for Dennis "Perp" Hofmeyer from Oolman Funeral Homes.

Mr. Dennis Hofmeyer, age 60, of Hospers, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at his residence.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, April 12, at 2:00pm, at the Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers. The Rev. Dr. Brian Janssen will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Newkirk Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday, at 1:15pm, at the church. Visitation with the family will be on Friday, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Dennis Dean was born on June 25, 1953, in Orange City, the son of Wallace Dean and Alma June (Roos) Hofmeyer. He was raised at Hospers and graduated from the Floyd Valley High School in Alton. He also attended Northwestern College in Orange City and the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

On April 22, 1976, he married Linda Rae Huisman in Hospers. They made their home in the Hospers area. He was co-owner of Brunsville Quality Meats, Inc., which later merged with Beeler’s Pure Pork, Inc., in Le Mars. He was in charge of quality control and production, developing most of the bacon, ham, and sausage recipes, which are still being used today.

“Perp” was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory as both a deacon and an elder, taught catechism and Sunday school classes, and was a very active youth leader for many years. His love of music led him to sing in the church choir and as a part of quartets. He also spent many nights with family singing around the piano.

He was a devoted family man and adored his grandchildren. He also wrote poetry, often humorous, and was a true people person. He was known for sitting on the big front porch of his old house with a cup of coffee in hand, ready to talk to anyone who passed by.

Survivors include his wife of almost 38 years; two daughters and their husbands, Bridgette and Chad De Vries, of Hospers; and Lacey and Caleb Conant, of Seaford, Virginia; a son and his wife, Jesse and Marie Hofmeyer, of Orange City; three grandchildren, Shane De Vries and Jadyn and Beckym Hofmeyer; his parents, Dean and Alma Hofmeyer, of Hospers; and three sisters and their husbands, Sharon and Kenneth Van Donslear, Diane and David Bosma, and Dawn and James Huisman; and a brother-in-law, Mark Miller, all of Hospers.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Miller, on January 31, 2014.

Memorials will be directed to Siouxland PACE, Newkirk RCYF, and the Floyd Ventures 4-H Club.
