W.L. Heald, one of the early day residents of this community, passed away at 4:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at his home in LeMars, following an illness which has extended over the past five months. The remains will be brought to Hawarden and funeral services will be conducted at 1 o’clock Friday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. West. Interment will be made in Grace Hill Cemetery where his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Heald are buried.

Wilfred Lewis Heald, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Heald, was born in Washington county, Ohio, November 11, 1855, and died at LeMars, Iowa, May 17, 1922, at the age of 66 years, 6 months and 6 days. In 1869 the family moved to Black Hawk county, Iowa, where they remained for one year, traveling overland in a covered wagon to Sioux County in 1870 and locating near Calliope. Here he grew to manhood and for a number of years operated the farm just north of this city now owned by Lewis Smith. On October 19, 1885, he was united in marriage with Mary Storie, who survives him. About thirty years ago they left this vicinity, moving first to Sioux City, then later onto a claim near Gann Valley, South Dakota, and from there to Royal, Nebraska, where they lived until last fall, When they purchased a home in LeMars and have since resided there. He united with the Presbyterian Church in Calliope when a young man, later transferring his membership to Royal, Nebraska. Besides his wife he is survived by four sons, all of whom were in the army during the war, and two daughters, Robert, who is still serving in the U.S. Army, Wilma, of Sundance, Wyoming, Archie and George of Sundance, Wyoming and Miss Meredith who is a teacher at Ewing, Nebraska, and Miss Winifred of LeMars. One son and daughter died in infancy. He also leaves two brothers and one sister, A.W. Heald of Denver, Colorado, Chas M. Heald of Spokane, Washington, and Mrs. W.E. West of Hawarden.
