Dick Kluis, age 87, of Maurice, died Friday, Jan. 10,1997 at the Sioux Center Community Nursing Home. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Reformed Church of Maurice. The Rev. Wayne Sneller officiated. Burial followed at Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home, Orange City.

Dick, who was actually named Richard Arie, was born July 6, 1909 in The Netherlands, the son of Herman and Nellie Kluis. He came to the United States at the age of six. On Feb. 2, 1933 he married Bertha Hofkamp at Orange City. They farmed in the Orange City-Maurice area until 1973, when they retired into Maurice.

Mrs. Kluis died May 19, 1984 at Sioux City. In 1989 he became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. In 1994 he transferred to the Sioux Center Community Nursing Home. Mr. Kluis was a member of the First Reformed Church where he had served on the consistory as an elder and a deacon.

He had also been a director of the Maurice School Board. Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Marlee and Herb Zeutenhorstof Sioux Center, and Wanda and Elmer Hofmeyer of Orange City; threesons, Rodney and his wife Darlene, and David and his wife Lonna, all of Maurice; and Herman of Orange City; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a brother, Felix of Slayton, Minn.; and two sisters, Mrs. William C. (Mary) Hulstein of Sioux Center, and Mrs. Dallas (Margaret) Grandia of Michigan.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Marvin; a daughter- in-law.
