Died: 1922

Thos. Sedwick, for thirty-five years a resident of Hawarden, passed away at 6:30 Wednesday evening at the Hawarden hospital, following an illness of several months during which time he failed quite rapidly. His condition became so grave that on April 29th he submitted to an operation. While he rallied at first from the effects of this ordeal, the improvement was only temporary and for the past week it has been known to the members of his family that the end was near.

Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church at 2:30 Friday afternoon, in charge of Rev. W.A. Winterstein, and interment will be made in the cemetery here.

Thomas Sedgwick was born in New Diggings, Wisconsin, July 7, 1848, so had attained the age of 74 years, 10 months and 10 days. He spent his boyhood in Wisconsin and on June 8, 1870, was united in marriage with Sarah Ann Edge at New Diggings. Mrs. Sedgwick passed away September 23, 1921, following a prolonged illness. Grief over the death of his wife, who had been his companion for more than fifty-one years, undoubtedly contributed greatly to his decline and hastened his death. In August, 1877, Mr. Sedgwick and family came west and settled at Portlandwille, now Akron, where he engaged in the live stock business. Ten years later they took up their residence in Hawarden and he has been a resident of this community since that time. Since the death of Mrs. Sedgwick he has made his home with his sons in this city.

He is survived by three sons, Will and Charles of Hawarden, and George A. of Des Moines. He also leaves three brothers and four sisters, J.W. Sedgwick of South Dakota, J.L. Sedgwick of Wessington Springs, South Dakota, Elizabeth Peacock of New Diggings, Wisconsin, Sarah J. Humphrey of Burns , Wyoming, Ruth E. Callan of Spokane, Washington, and Emma Agnes of Blunt, South Dakota.

In the death of Thomas Sedwick, Hawarden loses one of its best known citizens. As a pioneer live stock buyer here he formed a wide acquaintance among the farmers and stockman in this territory and his extensive business transactions contributed in no small way towards the up building and ultimate prosperity of this community. He gradually trained his sons, Will and Charles, in the live stock business and for a good many years past they have borne the brunt of the business which their father established although he remained active up until the past year and his counsel and judgment were always keenly sought by them in their business transactions. He made and retained many lasting friendships and those who deeply mourn his death include some outside the family.
