James Kroese, 78, of Hull died Friday, May 3, at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon. Services were at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Christian Reformed Church in Hull with the Rev. Carl Klompicn officiating. Burial was in Hope Cemetery in Hull.

Kroese was born December 6, 1923, in Hull, the son of Joe and Alice (Brummel) Kroese. He was raised on his parents farm and attended country school at rural Boyden. He married Janet Rens on March 25, 1948, at Perkins. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to a farm just south of Hull, where they raised their family. They retired and moved to Hull in April 1995.

He was a lifelong member of First Christian Reformed Church in Hull, where he had been a deacon and elder, taught catechism classes and attended various Bible societies faithfully. He had served on the boards of directors of Hull Christian School, Farmers Cooperative Gas and Oil and the Cooperative Elevator. He enjoyed family gatherings, sports and joyful music. He will be remembered as always being ready to help others.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years; two children and their spouses, Arlene and Lee Scholten of Boyden and Merlyn and Linda Kroese of Hull; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Johanna and Sid Westra of Hull; a brother and his wife, Albert J. and Florence Kroese of Hull; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials are being directed to Western Christian High School.
