Mr. John Meendering, age 92, of Hull, passed away on Friday, February 7, 2014, at his residence in Hull.

There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, February 12, at 11:00am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Loren Kotman will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. There will be a family prayer service on Wednesday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Visitation will be after 6:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00 to 7:30pm, at the funeral home.

John was born on July 30, 1921, at Hull, the son of Albert and Hanna (Te Slaa) Meendering. He was raised on a farm northeast of Hull.

On December 29, 1943, he married Margaret De Wit at Hull. They made their home in Hull, where he was first a plumber with Plasier Plumbing. He then started a 41-year career with the Hull Cooperative Gas and Oil Station. He drove the tank truck, delivering gas to farms around Hull for six years. Then he drove the transport which brought gas from Sioux City to Hull.

Mr. Meendering was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where he served as a deacon and an elder on the consistory for fifteen years. He also led a Friendship Bible class, taught catechism classes, and founded the Mid-West Evangelism League with two other men. For over thirty years, he was on the board of directors of the Sioux City Gospel Mission, where he provided many messages to those who ate or slept there. He felt a Christian education was important and was able to send all his children to Christian elementary and high schools.

He enjoyed camping and traveling, especially to the Black Hills of Sioux Dakota. He loved God’s nature and was always taking photographs of it. For many years, he had a large garden, sharing its fruits with family and neighbors. He was a handy man and always took time to listen and console people. In later years, he took-up woodworking, from which his children and Christian school auctions benefited. He enjoyed word puzzles and games and appreciated visitors.

Survivors include his wife of over seventy years; seven children, Albert Meendering, and his wife, Trudy, of Kansas City, Missouri; Alice Parker, of Rapid City, South Daktoa; Phyllis, and her husband, Doyle Van Sant, of Phoenix, Arizona; Donna, and her husband, Bob Bonestroo, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Marvin Meendering, and his wife, Kim, of Sioux Center; Daryl Meendering, and his wife, Paula, of Hull; and Nora, and her husband, Jerry Vanden Bos, of Rapid City; thirteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; a brother, George Meendering, of Sioux Center; and a sister-in-law, Henrietta Meendering, of Martinsdale.

He was preceded in death by two infant children, Harold and Marilyn Meendering; two daughters-in-law, Rachel and Laurel Meendering; a brother, Bernard Meendering; a sister and her husband, Gertrude and Morris Leusink; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Meendering.
