Paul Kleyer, age 68, of rural Rock Valley, Iowa died Saturday evening, July 31, 2004, at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services were held Thursday, August 5 at Carmel Reformed Church, Carmel, Iowa, with Rev. Mark Heijerman officiating. Interment was in the Carmel Cemetery.

Paul Robert Kleyer was born on March 18,1936, in Hudson, SD, to John and Sophie (Meendering) Kleyer. He was raised in the Boyden and Doon areas and in 1944 settled at Carmel, Iowa. He attended rural schools and the Sioux Center High School. On June 15, 1956, he was united in marriage to Carole Joyce DeGraaff at Hull, Iowa. Together they labored on their dairy farm. Paul was also a media delivery man for Area 4. He was a member of Carmel Reformed Church where he had served as an Elder, Deacon, and RCYF sponsor. He was also a member of the Heritage Board and Trustee of Plato Township. Paul was a collector of International Harvester tractors, both large and small. He enjoyed tractor pulls, fishing, working in his shop but especially enjoyed having his grandchildren around him.

Say not that he was a good man, a good husband, father, or grandfather but that he loved his Lord. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carole; 3 sons and their wives, John and Lori Kleyer of Sioux Center, IA; Daryl and Lisa Kleyer of Williston, ND; Mark ad Carol Kleyer of Orange City, IA and one daughter and her husband, Lori and Preston Vander Plaats of Sioux Center; 11 grand-children, Paul, Rebecca, Sara and Maggie, Nathan, Nicole, Kristin and Matthew Kleyer, Kari, Maria and Jill Vander Plaats. Also surviving is one sister and her husband, Sylvia and John De Ruyter of Rock Valley, IA, and nieces and nephews. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, and a granddaughter, Megan Kleyer.
