Mary Carol Van Wyk, 52, died Saturday, November 10, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines following a five-month illness with melanoma.

Services were Tuesday, November 13, at Sully Christian Reformed Church in Sully with Dr. Joseph I. Brinks officiating. Burial was in Sully Cemetery.

The former Mary Bouma was born April 8, 1938, at Hull. She graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull in 1955 and was the first student to enroll at Dordt College in Sioux Center in 1956 where she attended for one year. After moving to Sully she taught at Sully Christian Grade School for a year. She married Darrell Van Wyk at Hull on May 29, 1957. They farmed in the Grinnell area until moving near Sully in 1968. She returned to college and graduated from Central College in Pella in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She taught at Newton Christian Grade School for six years. Her last teaching position was at Pella Christian Grade School in Pella.

She was a member of Sully Christian Reformed Church and was a Sunday School teacher, a Calvinette leader and member of the Faith Society. She had been a member of Hull Christian Reformed Church in her youth.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Carol Spronk of Sioux Falls; three sons, Douglas and Curtis, both of Sully, and Russell of Pella; her parents, Lambert and Wilma Bouma of Hull; one brother, Owen Bouma of Hull; one brother, Owen Bouma of Highland, Indiana; a sister, Lois Westra of Sioux Center; and 10 grandchildren.
