Sioux Center News of Oct 14, 1992

John Kooi, 94, of Sioux Center, died on October 9. Funeral services were October 12 at Bethel Christian Reformed Church In Sioux Center, the Rev. Robert Holwerda officiating. Casket bearers were Harvard Van Ballegooyen, Corwln Harthoorn, Verlyn Kooi, Keith Kooi, Terry Kooi and David Goslinga. Arnold and Margaret Feekes sang Nearer, Still Nearer and Gloria Wynia was the organist. The congregation sang Amazing Grace and How Great Thou Art. The committal was at Lebanon Cemetery in Sioux Center.

Kooi was born on May 18. 1898, in Garfleld Township In Sioux County to Remko and Greta (Kasteln) Kooi. He lived his youth and attended country school in Garfleld Township. He married Gertie Vander Lugt on February 10, 1921 in Hawarden. After their marriage, they farmed In the Lebanon area until their retirement In 1960.

His wife, Gertie Kooi, died on July 31. 1966, in Sioux Center. Kooi moved to the Sioux Center Hospital Nursing Wing in 1987. He was an elder and deacon In the Lebanon Christian Reformed Church, where he was a member for many years. During the latter part of his life, he was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church.

Survivors are two daughters, Dreaka and her husband, Henry Van Ballegooyen of Hawarden and Grace and her husband, Cornie Harthoorn, of Rock Valley; four sons. Randall and Mary Kooi of Hardwlck. Minnesota, William and Margaret Kooi of Sioux Center, Peter and Nella Kooi of Inwood and Elmer and Karen Kooi of Sioux Center; two sisters. Bertha Vander Lugt of Hawarden and Jennie Haverhals of Sioux Center; two brothers, George Kooi of Sioux Center and Ellis Kooi of Rock Valley; 30 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

He was preceded In death by three brothers, Ben Kooi, Peter Kooi and Fred Kooi; two sisters. Gertie Haverhals and Dreaka Haverhals; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services were by Memorial Funeral Home.
