Oolman Funeral Home obituary

Mrs. Gerdena Bomgaars Sikma, age 92, of Hull, passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, January 29, at 3:00pm, at the American Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Kevin Yurk will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. There will be a family prayer service on Wednesday, at 2:00pm, at the church.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 7:30pm, at the church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Gerdena was born on July 5, 1921, in rural Sioux Center, the daughter of John and Grace (Koerselman) Dokter. She was raised at Middleburg, where she attended a country school.

On December 11, 1940, she married John N. Bomgaars in Middleburg. They made their home mostly in Sioux County, settling in Hull. John passed away on June 3, 1974, in Sioux Center.

On July 8, 1977, she married Arie N. Bomgaars in Hull. They continued to live in Hull. He passed away on July 7, 1997, in Sioux City.

On June 22, 2004, she married Gerrit James Sikma in Hull. He passed away on August 15, 2006, in Hull.

In 2007, Gerdena moved to Sioux Center, where she lived at the Franken Manor until May of 2012, when she transferred to the Royale Meadows Care Center.

Although always a homemaker, she was also employed at the De Jong and Vander Schaaf Hardware Store and later owned and operated the Handy Grocery Store.

Mrs. Sikma was a member of the First Reformed Church. She enjoyed fishing and playing board games and cards, especially Rook, with her friends.

Survivors include her two daughters, Gladys, and her husband, Larry Jacobsma, of Visalia, California; and June Sneller, of Sergeant Bluff; a son and his wife, Lee and Dee Bomgaars, of Hull; nine grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, a brother and his wife, Gary and Liz Dokter, of Sioux Center; two step-daughters and their husbands, Janet and Erwin Bonestroo, of Steen, Minnesota; and Lois and Joseph “Ted” Salazar, of Hull; and s step-son and his wife, Gary and Eloise Sikma, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Elmer Sneller; a grandson, Jonathan Bomgaars; a granddaughter-in-law, Nancy Jacobsma; and two sisters, Jeanette Vande Griend and Gertrude Van Gorp.

Memorials will be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
