Clarence H. KooimaClarence H. Kooima, 72, of Hawarden died Tuesday, March 21, 1995 at his home following a long illness. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Christian Reformed Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Timothy Van Zalen officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation began at 11 a.m. Friday, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Mr. Kooima was born Sept. 19, 1922, at Inwood, the son of Nick and Henriette (Koning) Kooima. He was orphaned at age 8 and lived with an older sister, Tena Veldman. On June 4, 1947, he married Pearl Van Dyke at Orange City. The couple farmed near Hudson, S.D., for 23 years before moving to Hawarden in 1970. He then worked at Siouxland Implement in Ireton and as a custodian at West Sioux school in Ireton, retiring in 1987. During that time, he also helped area farmers and did volunteer work. Mr. Kooima was an active member and past deacon of the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church.
Survivors include his wife five daughters, Mrs. Howard (Dorinda) Van Engen of Hawarden, Mrs. Harry (Barbara) Kibler of Minneapolis, KA., Mrs. Steven (Paula) Parkin of LeMars, Julie Hulstein of LeMars and Mrs. David (Judy) Peter of Summerville, SC.; 10 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two sister Ann Spoolstra of South Holland, IL., and Rolene Vander Velde of Bellflower, CA., and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Fred, Sam and Jake, and a sister, Tena.
