Arie Faber

Arie Faber, 87, of Orange City died Friday, May 12, at the Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen. Funeral service was Monday at 10 a.m. at the American Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Keith Krebs officiating. Interment was at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.

Faber was born on March 8, 1919, in Orange City, the son of Hessel and Hiltje (Herder) Faber. He attended Orange City Christian School and graduated from Orange City High School. He then worked for Sudenga Industries in George.

While in George, he met Viola Louise Kluver, whom he married on June 6, 1941, in George. They made their home in Orange City. During World War II, he served in the United States Army, reaching the rank of sergeant. For more than a year, he was stationed in Germany, and after the liberation, he was one of the first soldiers to visit his parents' homeland of Holland. He could speak and write Dutch, so he was able to communicate with his relatives there.

He was employed by the Silent Sioux Corporation in Orange City for many years, starting as a welder and draftsman and eventually becoming chief engineer. Although he did not have the opportunity to attend college, he designed many products, especially for the U. S. Postal Service. After Silent Sioux was sold, he worked several years at Alkoda Manufacturing in Alcester, South Dakota. The Fabers also served as custodians of the Northwestern State Bank in Orange City for over 20 years.

She died September 16, 1990, in Sioux Falls. In March of 2004, he became a resident of Happy Siesta. He was a member of the American Reformed Church, where he faithfully attended worship services. He served several years on the board of directors of the Sioux County Historical Society. He had a passion for woodworking. In retirement, he assisted at Oolman Funeral Homes for several years.

Survivors include his two daughters and their husbands, Leah and Roger Heimensen of Arnolds Park and Helen and Owen Kleinwolterink of Sioux Center; a daughter- in-law, Sheryl Faber of Spirit Lake; eight grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters and six great grandsons. He was also preceded in death by his son, Allen, in May of 2001. A memorial fund will be established.
