Robert B. "Spike" Thayer, 82, of Rock Valley, died Friday, September 22, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley. Services were Monday at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley with burial in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Rock Valley.

Thayer was born on January 24, 1913, near Deer Trail, Colorado, the son of Alfonso and Lily (Thornton) Thayer. He moved with his family to the rural Rock Valley area in 1934. He married Helen McNamara on Januarty 1, 1940, in Rock Valley. The couple lived near Rock Valley, where he farmed. Mrs. Thayer died on March 31, 1976. He moved to Rock Valley in 1978. He was one of the original Rock Valley Golf Club members.

Survivors include a son and his wife, John and Sheila of Richmond, Virginia; three daughters, Verna and her husband, George Jackley, of Omaha, Eleanor and her husband, Jack Chapman, of Arlington, Virginia and Ruth Thayer of Falls Church, Virginia; a sister, Verna Childers, of Sanborn; and three grandchildren, Michael and Tricia Roll, and Joe Thayer.

He is prreceded in death by a brother, Del, and a sister, Jessie Taylor.
