The late John Claus Frederick Umland was born on March 23, 1864, in Osten Pryvince, Hannover Germany. He was baptized March 28. At sixe years of age he had to attend the public schools of his home village. Following catechetical instruction by his pastor, he was confirmed when he reached the age of 13 years. After his confirmation he was engaged in general work and remained in the old country until the wonder lust took hold of him and he made the trip over the Atlantic ocean. His first stop was at Alleghenny PA, where he worked for a short time and then went to Kansas City from whence he came to western Iowa to establish a home.

He worked near Boyden and Sheldon on the farm. On the 23 th day of October, he joined hands in holy matrimony with Miss Berth Meyn. This union was blessed with 12 children, of which one, Minnie, preceded him in death. He rented the now Herman Meyn farm and had saved enough money to buy a farm of his own, where he lived for forty years. 18 years ago he had lung fever and his condition was exceedingly serious, but he recovered, yet an asthematic condition was the after math of the illness which remained with him as long as he lived. On the 1st of July of this year, the deceased had to go to the hospital at Hull to be operated on. Shortly before his operation he desired and received holy communion. When operated upon they found a very serious case of cancer of the stomach. His last hours came tem minutes after 5 o'clock on July 18.

He leaves to mourn heir loss eleven children, Katie, Mollie, Emma, Peter, Marie, Herman, Claus, John, Metta, Nillie, Willie, two sons-in-laws, Howard and Wilke Clausen; four grandchildren; two sisters, Meta and Marie and one brother, Barthold Umland. The last three live in Germany. He reached the age of 70 years, 3 months, and 25 days.
