Mrs. John Umland

The late Mrs. Umland whose maiden name was Bertha Meyn, was born on the 15th of August, 1872 in Pittsburg PA. and shortly after that she was baptized. Two years old she came with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Meyn, to Iowa and the Meyn family made their home on that well know farm one half mile west of Boyden near the railroad. Here Mrs. Umland spent the days of her childhood attended the schools that existed in those pioneer days and was confirmed on the 2 nd day of April 1888, a Missouri Lutheran pastor, Rev Schuessler, who dwelt in Hull, IA.

After her confirmation she remained at home until she joined hands in matrimony with Mr. John Umland on October 20, 1893. The young couple resided on rented farms until it was able to buy their ouwn farm, which came to pass in the year 1895, a farm which up to the present day is the home of the Umland family. God blessed Mr. and Mrs. Umland with 12 children of which one daughter, Minnie preceded her mother in death.

The names of the children are as follows; Catherina, Emma, Peter, Marie, now Mrs. Howard Claussen, Herman, Amelia, Claus, John, Meta, Nellie and Willie, eleven in all and who together with their bereaved father mourn their loss of a beloved wife and mother.

Mrs. Umland had her share of hardships and distress, suffering with gallstone trouble and miner diseases. Since last Christmas she felt none to good, having the flu and later an attack of gallstone trouble. But she recovered nicely and all seemed well even during the night prior to her demise, she slept will, but lo, little before 7 o'clock on Friday morning she suffered a heart stroke and the end of her life had come.

She leaves her husband and the aforementioned children and one grandchild, two brothers, Herman Meyn and Peter Meyn of Sheldon; two sisters, Mrs. John Rhode, Boyden, Iowa and Mrs. Dickman, Hull, IA. She reached the age of 59 years, 7 months and 3 days.
