Gary H. Koerselman, 46, of Des Moines, a former Sioux City councilman, died in his sleep Sunday,
Nov. 6. Services were at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Morningside Reformed Church in Sioux City with the Rev. Louis E. Lotz officiating. Burial was in Middleburg Cemetery, rural Orange City under direction of the Meyer Brothers Funeral Home.Mr. Koerselman was born July 16,1942 in Hull. He attended grade school in Sioux Center and graduated from Sioux Center HighSchool in 1959. He received a BA degree from Northwestern College in 1964 with a major in history. In 1965, he graduated from the University of South Dakota with a major in history and a minor in political science and graduated in 1970 from Northern Illinois University with a doctorate with emphasis on history, internal politics, political economy and 20th Century American studies..
He was a professor of history and political science at Morningside College from 1969-87. He served on the Sioux City Council from 1982- 86. From January 1987 to April 1987 he was employed as a correspondent for the Sioux City Journal at Capitol Hill in Des Moines. Since May, 1987, he had worked in the marketing department of the Department of Iowa Economic Development at Des Moines. His book, The Lost Decade, was published in 1987.
He married Jenny Meloy June 12,1987. Mr. Koerselman was a member of Morningside Reformed church. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Alex (Amy) Zimmerman of Omaha and Ann Koerselman of Des Moines; a stepdaughter, Jackie Meloy of Sioux City; his parents, Gary and Leona Koerselman of Sioux Center; four sisters, Mrs. Glenn (Glenda) Brewer of Lincoln, Neb., Mrs. Bob (Laura)Vermeer of Omaha, Mrs. Rick (Wanda) Van Sloten of Hawarden and Mrs. Curt (Karen) Brandes of Sioux Center, and a granddaughter, Amber Zimmerman
