Jans, Nellie (Mrs. Henry) 1921-2013

Nellie Pearl Jans, age 92, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2013, at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

There will be a memorial service on Monday, December 30, at 11:00am, at the Free Grace Reformed Church in Middleburg. The Rev. Stephen Breen will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Monday, at 9:45am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 4:00pm to 5:30pm, at the funeral home.

Nellie Pearl was born on August 1, 1921, in rural Orange City, the daughter of Ben and Della (Swets) Wiersma. She was raised on a farm at Middleburg, where she attended a country school.

On September 12, 1946, she married Henry Jans at her parents’ home near Middleburg. They farmed at Middleburg. Henry passed away on August 15, 1986, in Sioux City, after almost forty years of marriage.

Mrs. Jans then moved to the Pioneer Court in Orange City. In 2011, she became a resident of the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull. In July of 2012, she transferred to Royale Meadows.

She was a lifetime member of the Free Grace Reformed Church, where she participated in most of their activities.

Although primarily a homemaker, Nellie also cleaned houses and offices.

She enjoyed attending her children’s and grandchildren’s events, watching sports, playing cards, going out for coffee, and crocheting afghans.

Survivors include her son and his wife, Ben and Janice Jans, of Sioux Center; two daughters and their husbands, Jan and Marv Van Bruggen, of Orange City; and Debra and Clifford Brunsting, of Mesa, Arizona; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Michelle and Rob Kalb, of Waukee; Jon and Taylor Van Bruggen, of Ankeny; Dave and Brooke Van Bruggen, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Christie and Jon Conover, of Orange City; Brian and Holli Jans, of Sioux Falls; Cory and Stephanie Brunsting, of Prescott, Arizona; and Holly Brunsting, of Apache Junction, Arizona; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Harriet Vander Zwaag, of Sioux Center; and Angeline Tiedemann, of Sibley.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister and her husband, Catherine and Henry Van Peursem; and a brother and his wife, Tunis “Tony” and Leona Wiersma.
