Mr. William Van Sloten, age 88, of Hull, passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2013, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, December 28, at 2:00pm, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Harlan De Jong will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday, at 1:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.
Visitation will be after 6:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 7:30pm, at the funeral home.
William John was born on August 1, 1925, at Hull, the son of John and Nettie (Van Maanen) Van Sloten. As a young child, his family lived on a farm north of Hull. When he was ten years old, they moved to a farm southwest of Rock Valley. He attended a country school for eight years.
On June 22, 1945, he married Geneva Alida Bomgaars at Rock Valley. They moved into a trailer house on the family farm, where they lived for two years. They then moved to a farm south of Hull, where he worked for neighboring farmers until 1952, when he started farming on his own. He continued to live there until 1966, when the family moved to a farm north of Hull. In the spring of 1979, after 26 years of farming, they moved into Sioux Center. He then was employed at the Farmers Elevator in Orange City for twelve years. Geneva passed away from cancer on August 11, 1983, in Sioux City.
In October of 2005, “Bill” became a resident of the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.
He was a member of the First Reformed Church.
Bill enjoyed solving word find puzzles, playing games, and socializing with his family and friends, especially the other residents at Pleasant Acres.
Survivors include his two children and their spouses, Beverly and Henry Schelling, of Omaha, Nebraska; and Dennis and Pam Van Sloten, of Hull; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Crystal and Gary Hoogeveen, Cindra and Dan Kamphoff, Chasitie amd Steve Vander Plaats, Matt and Lynn Van Sloten, Curt and Della Van Sloten, Mindy and Loren Halma, and Carrie and Mark Dieters; eleven great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Geraldine Klomp, of Rock Valley; and a sister-in-law, Ann Van Sloten, of Hawarden.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Wilbur Van Sloten; a grandson, Clinton Schelling; a great-grandson, Zachary Hoogeveen; five brothers, Willy, Gerrit, John, Jr., Hank, and Henry Van Sloten; and three sisters, Henrietta Olivier, Coba Boersma, and his twin, Janet Van Sloten.
Memorials will be directed to Hope Haven in Rock Valley.
