Henry Vande Waerdt, 86, of Orange City died Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Orange City Hospital Long-Term Care Facility.

Services were Friday Jan. 30, at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City, with the Rev. G.M. De Leeuw officiating. Burial was at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.

Henry Vande Waerdt, son of Anthony and Hermijntje (Van Kolschoten) Vander Waerdt, was born Sept. 20, 1917, in Ede, The Netherlands. At the age of 3 he came to America with his parents by boat and they settled in Middleburg.

When he was 7 years old, the family returned to the Netherlands for a short time. They then came back to the United States and lived on a farm near Rock Valley. He attended school in the Netherlands and went to country schools in this country. As a young man, he worked for area farmers.

He married Tena Westra on Nov. 2, 1948, in Sioux Center. They made their home in Orange City, where he was employed at Van Eizenga Lumber Company for 15 years. He then worked at the Farmers Cooperative Lumber Yard in Alton for 13 years. Much of his work consisted of hauling coal and lumber. He became a resident of Orange City Hospital Long-Term Care Facility in July , 1999.

He was a member of Netherlands Reformed Church in Sioux Center.

Survivors include his wife, Tena Vande Waerdt of Orange City; a daughter Alice Frye of Noel, Mo; two grandsons, three great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law Henrietta Vande Waerdt of Rock Valley; four nieces; and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by a brother; William Vande Waerdt.
