John Vander Ziel, 91, Hills, MN. formerly of Sheldon, died Friday, Nov. 24, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Services were Tuesday, Nov. 28, at United Reformed Church in Hills, MN, with the Rev. Doug Barnes officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery under the direction of Roste Funeral Home in Hills, MN.

John Vander Ziel, son of Burgert and Berdena (Pleiter) Vander Ziel, was born Feb. 2, 1915, in Orange City. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. As a young man, he farmed with his dad, drove truck and operated a feed grinder. He married Gertrude Brouwer on Feb. 22, 1940. They made their home near Ireton and later moved to California, where he worked in a venetian blind factory. Three years later they moved to Sheldon and opened a venetian blind factory. They moved in 1948 to Holland MN. where they farmed for the next 30 years. They retired in 1978, and moved to Hills, MN. He was diagnosed with kidney failure in August of 2005 and he began dialysis.

He was a member of United Reformed Church in Hills, MN. He served as elder for many years and as a school board member of the Holland Christian School.

Survivors include three daughters, Beverly and John Den Besten of Hills, Shirley and Leon Mulder of Doon, and Elaine and Ken Vanden Berg of Hills, MN. 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude, a grandson, Daniel Mulder, six brothers, Henry, George, Gerrit, Steven, Bernard and Paul Vander Ziel; a sister, Catherine Van Leeuwen.
