Cornelius Van Zyl was born March 21, 1866 at Pella, Iowa and was a son of Mr. and Mrs.Bert Van Zyl, who later moved to the Newkirk vicinity. On October 31, 1889, he was united in marriage to Helena Van Es, who preceded him in death on June 5, 1931. During their first years of married life they lived hear Newkirk. They moved to Hospers where he went into the implement, real estate and chicken hatchery business. He moved to Sheldon in 1923. Then in 1935 he moved back to Hospers. Two children, Bert and Tillie, preceded their father in death.

Mr. Van Zyl was a member of the First Reformed Church and served as elder, Sunday School teacher and superintendent.

Survivors include Gerrit of Holland, Mich. Kate, (Mrs Joe Hoffs) of Hospers, Cornerlius of Gresham, Oregon, Helena, (Mrs Walt Wesselink) of Sheldon, Jean, (Mrs. Ed Rackes) of Holland Mich. and Mary of Hawarden, 13 grandcchildren and one sister Mrs. Chris Jacobs of Orange City.

Funeral services were conducted in the Ref. church with Rev. and Mrs. G. Doctor and Rev. G. Douwstra of Hull, officiating. Interment was made west of town.

Dr. and Mrs. Gerrit Van Zyl and Mr. and Mrs. Rackes of Michigan and Cornelius Van Zyl of Gresham, Ore. attended the funeral.
