Sioux Center News June 10, 1965

Gerit Wesselink, 61, former Sioux Center resident, general counsel for the U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C., died in Washington about 7;30pm Thursday of a heart ailment.

He had suffered an attack at his home about 4:30 am the previous day.

Memorial services were held in the chapel at Ft. Meyer on Monday morning at 11am and burial was made in Arlington cemetery.

His brother, John of Sioux Center, and wife, Vera attended the funeral services. They were in New York City on vacation at the time Gerrit passed away and were notified of his demise there. They had planned to be in Washington D.C., on Saturday for a visit at the Gerrit Wesselink home before returning to Sioux Center. Gerrit had visited briefly in Sioux Center last year.

Survivors include his widow, Marion of 5103 Baltimore Ave., Washington, D.C.; two sons, John, 18, a freshman at Hope college and Malcom, 16, a junior in high school; a daughter, Marilyn, 14, freshman in high school; four brothers, John of Sioux Center, Pete of Clio, Mich., Ed of Pella and Art of Eagle Grove, Iowa; four sisters Pearl (Mrs. Lane Bruinsma) of Sioux Center, Grace (Mrs. Elmer Meredith) of West Liberty, Ia., Alice (Mrs. Jess Wells) of Omaha, Nebr., and Alma (Mrs. Henry Beyer) of Hull.

Mr. Wesselink had been a member of the Air Force legal staff at the Pentagon for many years, and served for a time as acting general counsel before becoming the official general counsel about two years ago.

Mr. Wesselink had practiced law for a time in Chicago prior to going to Washington, D.C. He was in military service during World War II, going in as a orivate and emerging as a major.
