Bernice Treinen,88, of Remsen died on Wednesday, June 13, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The funeral service was held on Sat. morning, June 16, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen.

Casket Bearters were William Hanigan, Dennis and Jerry Langel, Ronald Minten, Greg Pick and Dale Beckmann.

Visitation was held on Friday afternoon and evening, June 15, a rosary held at 3 p.m. by St. Mary's Guild and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen, which was in charge of arrangements.

Bernice was born on Oct. 20, 1918, in Alton to William and Clara (Reith) Minten.

She was raised in the Alton area and received her education at St. Mary's Academy in Alton, from which she graduated in 1937.

She then moved to Remsen, where she was employed at the Johnson Cafe for several years.

She then attended Sioux City School of Cosmetology at Sioux City, from which she graduated in 1941.

That same year she purchased Elsie's Beauty Shop in Remsen, which she renamed Bernice's Beauty Salon.

On Jan. 20, 1942, she married LeRoy Treinen at Fort Dix, N.J. where he was stationed while in the Army and prior to his being shipped overeas during W.W. II.

During LeRoy's military service, Bernice made her home in Remsen, and LeRoy rejoined her after being honorably discharged on Aug. 16, 1945.

In 1952, Bernice moved her Beauty Salon to her presonal residence, where she operated until 2006.

Leroy died on May 20, 2002.

Bernice was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Church Guild.

Survivors include a daughter Jolene Treinen of Ira, sisters Theresa Pick of Remsen, and Julianna and her husband Clarence Langel of Alton and sister-in-law Jackie Minten of Orange City.

She was preceded by her parents; three sisters, Catherine in infancy, Melinda and her husband Richard Duits and Eleanor and her husband Lawrence Ruppert; brothers Norbert Minten, in infancy, and Robert Minten; a third brother-in-law Gergor Pick.
