Died: October 5, 2002Fred Stewart Zylstra, 86, Sioux Center, died Saturday, October 5, at Sioux Center Community Hospital Nursing Facility.
Services were Tuesday, October 8, at Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center with the Rev. Raymond “Van” Rathbun officiating. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center, under the direction of Oolman Funeral Home in Sioux Center.
Fred Zylstra, son of Herman and Sara (Frennema) Zylstra, was born December 24, 1915 in Hull. He was raised in Doon, where he graduated from Doon Christian School. He married Gertrude Henrietta Addink on April 14, 1941, in South Sioux City, Nebraska. Except for a short time in Doon, they made their home in Sioux Center. He was a truck mechanic and maintenance person at Sioux Center Creamery for many years. He became a resident of Sioux Center Community Hospital Nursing Facility in August 2000.
He was a member of Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center, where he served as a deacon on the consistory and taught Sunday School classes. He also was a foster grandparent at Hope Haven in Rock Valley for many years. He enjoyed fishing, trapping, hunting and smoking his pipe.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Zylstra of Sioux Center; two sons, Doug and Fran Zylstra of Loveland, Colorado and Ronald and Karen Zylstra of Inwood; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
