Life Legacy

Mrs. Dorothy Gesink, age 72, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2013, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.

There will be a memorial service on Monday, September 9, at 11:00am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Vande Zande and The Rev. Robert Drenten will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service on Monday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the funeral home.

Dorothy Mae was born on October 22, 1940, in Holland, Michigan, the daughter of Clarence and Kathryn (Sloothaak) Oosting. She was raised in Holland, where she attended the Holland Christian High School.

While attending the Reformed Bible Institute in Grand Rapids, Michigan, she met Elwin William Gesink. They were united in marriage on June 3, 1964, in Holland. While living in Holland, she was a homemaker and a registered nurse at the Holland Community Hospital. They then made their home in Sheldon for two years before moving to Orange City, where she became the housekeeping supervisor at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Dorothy was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, making puzzles, playing with her children and grandchildren, making baby blankets, and sending cards to the Crossroad Bible Institute for prisoners.

Survivors include her husband of more than 49 years; three children and their spouses, Doug and Heather Gesink, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Juli and Doug Veldhuizen, of Leighton, Iowa; and Dawn and Tim Schleis, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; six grandchildren, Josiah William Gesink, Katie Mae Veldhuizen, Ian Lee Veldhuizen, Toni Rae Stanford, Christian Mikel Stanford, and Ryah Faith Schleis; four siblings and their spouses, Don and Marilyn Oosting, Wes and Sharon Oosting, Rosie and Loren Boerman, and Gerald and Norma Oosting, all of Holland; three step-siblings, Alvin and Shirley Meiste, John and Faye Drenten, and Sandy and Harold Lampen; and Elwin’s siblings, Glen Gesink, and his wife, Liz, Harriet Van Hofwagon, and Clarice Kraayenbrink.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Elwin’s parents, Bill and Arta Gesink; three brothers-in-law, Albert Vis, Marinus Van Hofwagon, and Arend Kraayenbrink; a step-brother, Austin Meiste; and a niece, Arla Peterson.
