William Top, 95, of Orange City died Monday, January 15, at the Augustana Home in Minneapolis.

Services were Friday at American Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Harlan Van Oort officiating. Burial was at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.

Top was born on December 19, 1900, in Hospers, the son of Hendrik and willempje (Vander Berg) Top. He was graduated from Northwestern Classical Academy in 1923. On March 30, 1926, he and Lillian Vander Schaaf were married in Orange City. The couple lived in Orange City, where he operated the William Top Insurance Agency. He also was a real estate agent, retiring in 1966. He then served as correspondent for The Sioux City Journal and Des Moines Register. In December 1987, he and his wife became residents of the Augustana Home.

Top was a member of American Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory as an elder and deacon. He was a Sunday School teacher and member of the choir and the adult Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Lions club, the Planning and Zoning Commission, the Bicentennial Committee, World War II Rationing Board and the Missionary Home Building Committee. He was honored as Grand Marshall of an Orange City Tulip Festival.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Lila and Alvin Netten of Bloomington, Minnesota; a son and his wife, Dr. Willard and Esther Top of Montgomery, Alabama; five grandchildren, Patricia Morehead, William Top, Anne DoCarmo, Jane Ryan and David Netten; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Gerrit and five sisters, Hattie Beltman, Reka Van Es, Anna Van Oort, Jane Van Veldhuizen and Carrie Zwagerman.
