Death came suddenly Saturday afternoon to Ray D. Troutman of Sioux City, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Balkema. He was found dead on a davenport in his home by Mrs. Troutman and daughter, Phyllis, when they returned from town. Death was due to coronary thrombosis.

Mr. Troutman was born July 2, 1896 on a farm north of Ireton. He graduated from the Hawarden High School, and entered Morningside College in 1915. He was an athlete, being a member of the two mile relay team.

During World War I, he entered Officer's Training at Fort Sheridan, Ill. in the summer of 1918, and after receiving his Commission, was transferred to the artillery school at Lewisville, Kentucky. He was mustered out of the Army in the spring of 1919, in time to graduate with his class at Morningside. He entered the teaching profession in the fall of 1919 as High School principal and coach in Orange City. Then followed similar positions at Sergeant, Bluffs, Gushing and lastly at Merrill, where he was superintendent.

He was married to Miss Eva Balkema of Orange City in 1922, and they were the parents of one daughter, Phyllis.

Interested in photography, in 1935 he took up commercial photography as his profession, and he followed it to the time of his death. Mr. Troutman was widely known in school circles, as he took class pictures of many of the schools in Iowa, Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska.

Funeral services were held in the First Methodist Church in Sioux City, Tuesday, with the Rev. George Dunn officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Wayland K. Hicks, vocal soloist, and Faith Woodford at the organ. Services at Graceland cemetery in Sioux City were under the direction of Landmark Lodge, AF and AM.
