Hawarden Independent February 2, 1928

Hawarden friends of Elmer A. Turner were shocked Monday morning to read in Sioux City Newspapers of his home in Hollywood, Calif., Saturday afternoon, presumably as a result of his own act. Such action was so foreign to his customary cheery, light hearted nature as revealed to those who knew him best that his friends here are loath to believe such an act possible of him in the absence of more complete details of the tragedy. According to published reports the suicide is attributed to the loss of large sums of money, aggregating $50,000, in real estate transactions.

Word of his death said at first to have been accidental, was received Sunday by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. F.B. Turner, in Sioux City and later news dispatches gave details of the tragedy.

Mr. Turner was found in his garage by his son, Ernest, who was sent by Mrs. Turner to learn why he had not driven the car out to take her down town. He was found lying on the garage floor with a bullet wound in his head. A pistol was nearby. Mr. Turner died soon after being taken to a hospital.

Mr. Turner had been active in real estate transactions in Sioux City and surrounding territory and four years ago moved his family to Hollywood where he has been since engaged in the real estate business. While a number of his Sioux City ventures resulted unfortunately there was a no indication that his had disheartened him in any way and he continued to carry on his business activities in Hollywood with his customary energy.

Mr. Turner was a native of Sioux City, born there July 2, 1876 and was educated in the Sioux City schools. In 1900 he went to Nome, Alaska, where he participated in the hold rush.
