MATHEW EERNISSE, SR.

The following is a brief sketch of Matthew Eernisse, Sr., whose death at his home in Lincoln, Nebraska, was mentioned in last week's Bee. Mr. Eernisse was one of the pioneer settlers of Rock Valley vicinity and lived here for many yours. He is well remembered by all the older residents of this place and is well thought of by all who knew him.

Matthew Eernisse was born in Zealand, Holland, Feb. 13th, 1832. He came to Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, when he was fourteen years old. He was married to Mary Alwynse January 23rd, 1858. He was a soldier of the Civil war, having enlisted in the Twenty-seventh Regiment, Company F, Wisconsin volunteers, and served until the close of the war with credit to his country.

In the year 1880, he and his family moved to Rock Valley. The past six years, he had lived in Lincoln, Nebraska. He died Jan. 11th at his home at the age of eighty-seven years, ten months and twenty-nine days. His wife, four sons and four daughters survive him, one daughter having passed to her reward twenty-five years ago. All the children but one were present at his funeral which was held at the home Wednesday morning conducted by Rev. S. S. Hilscher of the Second Presbyterian Church of which Mr. Eernisse was a member since moving to Lincoln. The remains were taken to his old home at Rock Valley for burial.

Poster's note: According to various postings on ancestry.com, Mary (Alwynse) Eernisse's maiden name may have been spelled Maria Aalwynse. A number of family trees give Matthrew Eernisse's parents as Susanna (Cliquennoi) and Pieter Jacobus Ernisse.
