From the May 1, 1925 Hawarden Independent:

H. J. Welch who has been making his home with his son, Sidney J. Welch and family, in this city for the past year and a half, passed away about midnight Tuesday night following a lingering illness of many months duration due to the infirmities incident to his advanced years.

Funeral services will be held at the M. E. church at Ireton at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. A. Winterstein, pastor of the M. E. church of Hawarden, assisted by Rev. N. Moody, pastor of the Ireton M.E. church. Interment will be made in the Ireton cemetery.

Henry J. Welch was born Sept. 14, 1841, at Cato, Cayuga county, N.Y. and passed away from this life May 20, 1925, at the age of 83 years, 8 months and 6 days. When 21 years of age, he was united in marriage to Altivene Harrison. Four children were born to this union, three sons and one daughter. One son, Willie Delonville, died March 18, 1868. The surviving children are John Welch of Alsea, Ore., Mrs. A. E. Heffernan of Garvin, Minn., and Sidney J. Welch of Hawarden. He is also survived by six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In 1863 he enlisted as a musician in Co. I, 16th New York Volunteer Heavy Artillery in which organization he served for two years when he was given an honorable discharge. He was converted and united with the Baptist church in early manhood. In 1881 he moved with his family to Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and a little later, moved to Ireton where he lived for thirty-five years until he moved to Hawarden three years ago.

Mrs. Welch passed away November 18, 1923. Since that time, Mr. Welch has made his home with his son, Sidney J. Welch and family. He had been in poor health for five years and bedfast for one year.

Thus another veteran of the Civil War has answered the last roll call and the approach of another Memorial Day reminds us that there are but few of the heroes of '61 to '65 left among us. But time shall not dim the recollection of their heroic deeds and the memory of their lives will be cherished in the hearts of their countrymen so long as the nation survives.

Poster's note: According to the Civil War records database, Henry J. Welch served in Co. M of the New York 16th Heavy Artillery not Co. I
