From the February 5, 1920 Hawarden Independent:

Pioneer Laid to Rest

The remains of Mr. P. B. Warfield were shipped to Ireton on Wednesday morning for burial beside those of his wife, who died in Ireton a number of years ago. Mr. Warfield was among the early settlers of Ireton and had a wide circle of friends among the older people. He was an old soldier and had been a prominent member of the G. A. R of this place. He was a man of genial disposition and made friends wherever he went.

He was born in Ohio Sept. 30, 1839, and came to Iowa in 1873. He was a carpenter by trade and helped erect the depots at Ireton and Hawarden when the Northwestern road was built. He moved to Ireton in 1883 where Mrs. Warfield died on August 10, 1898. Afterwards he moved to Lincoln, Neb., where he continued to live until five years ago when he moved to Sioux Falls, S. D.. and lived with his daughter, Mrs. N. N. Coon, until the time of his death. He was taken ill Thursday evening of last week, which soon developed Into pleuro-pneumonia. He passed away Monday, Feb. 2nd, at 11 a. m. The body was accompanied from Sioux Falls by Mr. and Mrs. N, N. Coon and son Claude and his wife.

Poster's note: In researching Mr. Warfield for the Ireton Veterans project, we found that he was the son of Harriet (Balding) and John Warfield. He married Irene Fisher on April 28, 1864. On September 28, 1864, he enlisted in Co. E, 7th Illinois Infantry. After the war, the Warfields lived in Warren County, Illinois and then in 1873 to Iowa where in the 1880 census, they were living in Cass County.

The Warfields were the parents of two daughters, Harriet ("Hattie") who married William Bryant Day and died in 1907 and is buried in Pleasant Hill cemetery in Ireton and Alice who married N.N. Coon and passed away in 1920 and is buried in Woodlawn cemetery in Sioux Falls, S.D.
