From the Thursday, January 15, 1948 Hawarden Independent:

SAMUEL ARTHAUD DIES AT HOME OF SISTER IN CITY

Samuel Lee Arthaud, 60, of Manly, Iowa, died early Sunday morning in the home of his sister, Mrs. E T. Dunlap, in Hawarden. He was a veteran of World War I.

Mr. Arthaud came to Hawarden from Des Moines where he had been a patient in the Veterans hospital.

He suffered a stroke last July and improved sufficiently to leave the hospital in December. He suffered a. second stroke Sunday morning.

Funeral services were held at Eberly yesterday afternoon under the direction of A. Earl Ross.

Survivors besides Mrs. Dunlap are three sisters, Mrs. Viola Sneider of Coos Bay, Ore., Mrs. Nina Rogers of Sheboygan, Wis.; and Mrs. Vernie Camp of Eberly, and two brothers, Le Roy and Odle Arthaud of Sac City.

Poster's note: the obituary clearly says Eberly in two spots; however, perhaps it means Everly since Mr. Arthaud is buried in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Clay County, Iowa (see Iowa Gravestone photo project). In the 1925 Iowa census, Mr. Arthaud gives his parents' names as Estella (Berryman) and Benjamin Arthaud. His military headstone gives a birthdate of 11 March 1887 and a death date of 11 Jan 1948. He was a sergeant and served in the 274th Field Hospital, 19th Division
