JOHN TILGNER PASSED AWAY

DEATH CAME MONDAY NIGHT AT PASADENA, CALIF.

Was a Pioneer Resident of This Community and Long Active in Business Here

John Tilgner, pieneer resident of this community, passed away shortly before 7 o'clock Monday evening at his temporary home in Pasadena, Calif., where he had been sojourning with Mrs. Tilgner for about a year. He had been in poor health for some time but the attack of acute stomach trouble which brought on his death was but of two weeks duration. His death occurred while two of his children, Mrs. Roy C. Johnson of Sioux City and J. E. Tilgner of Hawarden, were speeding to his bedside on trains 48 hours apart. The former arrived, there the morning following his death while the latter was due to reach Pasadena this morning. The body will he brought back to Hawarden for burial but it has been impossible thus far to announce definite funeral arrangements.

John Tilgner was born at Rumelsburg, Germany, July 6, 1849, so had passed his 76th milestone. He came to America with his parents when 17 years of age, locating at Baraboo, Wis. On April 25,1878, he was united in marriage with Mina Jaeger of Watertown, Wis. In the spring of 1881 they located on a farm in Union county, S.D., a few miles northwest of Hawarden and continued to reside there until the spring of 1888 when they moved to Hawarden. Mr. Tilgner engaged in the meat market business in Hawarden and conducted a shop here for about ten years, operating a feed store in connection, during a part of the time. After retiring from the meat business he took over the Brewer Hotel in 1899 and conducted the hotel for about four years. Since 1903 he has not been engaged in active business in Hawarden although he constructed a large garage eleven years ago and his son, J. E. Tilgner, conducts his automobile business in this building. During the past few years, until he went to California a year ago Mr. Tilgner has devoted his time to assisting his son and looking after his other property interests.

Mr. Tilgner was a charter member of the re-organized Baptist church of Hawarden and has ever been a devoted church worker and prominent in all the activities of that organization. He saw the church develop from a mere handful of zealous Christian workers to its present large and prosperous condition and was always one of the faithful—dependable in every emergency.
