Wilfred Henry was born on May 16, 1928, in Hull, Iowa, the son of Henry and Winnie (Nyenhuis) Vande Burgt. He was raised on a farm near Hull until the age of fourteen, when the family moved into town. He attended the Hull Christian Grade School and graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull.

On February 12, 1951, he married Ella Mae Vlieger in Maurice, Iowa. From 1951 to 1953, he served in the United States Army at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. They then made their home in Hull. He became a resident of Pleasant Acres in February of this year.

“Willy” owned and operated his own feed grinder for 35 years. He also worked at the Hull Cooperative, was the caretaker for the Hope Cemetery, and sold monuments for Worthington Monument.

During his free time, Wilfred enjoyed gardening, reading, going to sporting events, especially those involving his grandchildren, and playing games.

He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory as a deacon and an elder and participated in the Men’s Society. He was also a member of the boards of directors of Hull Christian School and Western Christian High School, and he belonged to the Wegman-Koele American Legion Post. For fourteen years, he corrected Bible lessons for the Crossroad Bible Institute. Before being disabled by Parkinson’s disease, he volunteered for the Hope Haven Wheelchair Program.

Survivors include his wife of more than 62 years; five children and their spouses, Evonne Wielenga, of Maurice; Jerry Vande Burgt, and his wife, Margie, of Salem, Oregon; Beverly, and her husband, LaVerne Sheldahl, of Hull; Donna, and her husband, Craig Faber, of Rock Valley, Iowa; and Harv Vande Burgt, and his wife Marlene, also of Salem; nineteen grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jerry Wielenga; a granddaughter, Naomi Sheldahl; and a brother, Gilbert F. Vande Burgt.

The Vande Burgt family prefers memorials be directed to Hope Haven or Christian Education in lieu of flowers and gifts.
