Dick Dykstra, age 77, of Hospers, passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at his residence.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, August 10, at 10:30am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Marvin J. Leese will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hospers Cemetery near Hospers. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the church.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.

Dick Charles was born on April 1, 1936, in Sioux Center, Iowa, the son of Charley and Anna (Andringa) Dykstra. He was raised in Hospers, where he attended the Hospers Christian Elementary School and the Hospers Public High School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, and earned his GED while serving in Japan.

On September 10, 1959, he married Florence De Jong in Carmel, Iowa. The couple made their home in Hospers, where he was a carpenter for Virgil Ohl Construction for fifteen years. In 1973, he started his own company, Dykstra Construction.

Dick was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Hospers.

He enjoyed fishing, walking, golfing, camping, and traveling to Texas and Arizona during the winter months. He particularly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of more than 53 years, Florence; five children and their spouses, Deb, and her husband, Bart Peters, of Orange City, Wanda, and her husband, Steve Ruter, of Kanawha, Iowa, Randy Dykstra, and his wife Melanie, of Gilbert, Arizona, Melinda, and her husband, Randy Jacobsma, of Orange City, and Steve Dykstra, and his wife, Lori, of Newkirk, Iowa; seventeen grandchildren and their spouses, Jake Peters, Anna Peters, Katie Peters, Jillian and Eric Martinson, Tony Ruter, Tracy and Kyle Wiuff, Colton Ruter, Nathan Dykstra, Abbie Dykstra, Brittney and Keith Kooistra, Tyler Jacobsma, Tasha and Blake Kruger, Lexi Jacobsma, Lucas Jacobsma, Lindsey Jacobsma, Josh Dykstra, and Gracie Dykstra; three great-grandchildren, Troy Wiuff, Avery Martinson, and Sadie Martinson; eight siblings and their spouses, Wilma De Boer, of Sheldon, Iowa, Jesse Vander Plaats, of Sanborn, Iowa, Jim and Elizabeth Dykstra, of Orange City, Julia Dykstra, of Sheldon, Hank and Joyce Dykstra, of Orange City, Hilda Holtrop and Don Dykstra, both of Sheldon, and Betty and Herm Cooper, of Orange City.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Dykstra; three brothers-in-law, Simon De Boer, Walt Vander Plaats, and John Holtrop; and a sister-in-law, Shareen Dykstra.

Memorials will be directed to The Hope Lodge in Rochester, Minnesota, and the Hospers First Christian Reformed Church.
