Hawarden Independent of Dec 21, 1899
Mrs. Mary Ellen Cunningham died last Sunday morning at the home of her son, Eugene, from heart trouble. She had been ailing for a number of weeks and her three sons were at her bedside at the time of her death.
She was born in Brighton County WI, and was about 52 years of age. She was married to Peter Cunningham at Dover, WI, in 1869, and came to SD wither husband in 1882. Her husband died May 1, 1884, and two sons also passed away before her.
Three sons, Tom., Gene, and Ren, survive her. She returned to Hawarden from Onawa a few months ago and had just nicely settled to housekeeping with her sons, Gene and Ren, when the grim reaper called her home. She was fortified by the rites of the Catholic church of which she was a member.
The remains were taken to Rock Valley Wed. for burial beside those of her husband and sons. Her father John Nooney, and sister Mrs. Riley of Kenosha WI, Mrs. M. Long of Onawa, Mrs. Ream of Granville, and Mr. and Mrs. Slade of Hudson were here to attend the funeral.
