From the Thursday, March 28, 2002 Hawarden Independent:

Mima Newman, 77, of Hawarden, died Friday, March 22, 2002 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. Funeral service was Tuesday at the Associated Church in Hawarden with Pastor Char Fillingsness officiating. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Porter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mima "Blanche" Newman was born Nov. 3, 1924 at Marcus, to Irvin and Inez (Lehman) Simons. She grew up in the Spencer area and her family later moved to a farm near Ireton, and then near Hawarden. She graduated from Hawarden High School in 1942. She married Keith C. Newman on Jan. 17,1943 at Hawarden. They farmed in the Hawarden area for 23 years before moving into Hawarden. Mr. Newman died April 16,1994.

She was a member of the Associated Church in Hawarden, where she was active on many boards and women's groups. She was past president of the Hawarden Community Hospital Board.

Survivors include: four sons, Jerry of Cuba City, Wis., Dick of Grand Forks, N.D., Dennis of Glenwood, Iowa and Brad of Arlington, Texas; two brothers, Lyle Simons of Kingsley and Eldon Simons of Hayward, Calif.; sister, Beverly Cox of Norman, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Irvin Jr.
