DEATH CLAIMS JURGEN WEGNER
WELL KNOWN RESIDENT DIED LAST FRIDAY NIGHT
Was 64 Years Old and Farmed in Eagle Township 30 Years—Leaves Widow and Eight Children
Jurgen Wegner, for more than thirty years a well known and highly respected resident of this community, passed away at his home in this city shortly before midnight last Friday night, Dec. 11th. He had been ill for several weeks and for several days preceding his death his condition was critical. His death was attributed to heart trouble.
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Lutheran church in this city, conducted by his pastor, Rev. George Steinkamp. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.
Jurgen Wegner was born at Breiholz, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, Oct. 27, 1867, and died in Hawarden Dec. 11,1931, at the age of 64 years, 1 month and 14 days. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith when a youth in Germany. In 1884, at the age of 17, he came to America, locating at Durant, Iowa, where he worked as a stone mason for seven years. On Dec. 7, 1892, he was united in marriage with Miss Anna Duge of Stockton, Iowa. They moved onto a farm in Tama county in March, 1893, and lived there seven, years. In March, 1900, the family moved to the home farm in Eagle township, northeast of Hawarden, which Mr. Wegner successfully operated for thirty years. A little more than a year ago he purchased a home in Hawarden where since Dec. 1, 1930, he has resided with his wife and their daughter, Irene.
Besides his widow his death is mourned by eight children, Louis and Albert Wegner of Hawarden; William Wegner of Hudson; Mrs. Wealey Miller of Rock Valley; Mrs. Theo. Henningsen of Beaman, Iowa; Mrs. Wm. Groth of Traer, Iowa; Walter Wegner of Gladbrook, Iowa, and Miss Irene Wegner at home. He also leaves seven grandchildren, besides his aged father, now 88 years old, in Germany, two brothers and two sisters in Germany, one brother, Henry Wegner of Luverne, Minn., besides a host of relatives and friends.
Mr. Wegner was a kind and loving husband and father and a successful farmer and live stock feeder. He was always vitally interested in the affairs of the community in which he resided, taking an active and leading part in all matters relating to community betterment. For a period of 27 years he served either as school director or township trustee. He was a man of sterling character and his kind, genial personality won for him a host of friends who mourn his passing and extend sincerest sympathy to the bereaved in their great loss.
Among the out of town relatives md friends who were here to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wegner and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Willers of Luverne, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. John Rohlff and daughter Dorothy, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Rath, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Vogel arid Wm. Moeller of Rock Rapids, Iowa; and Mr. and Mrs. John Kruse, Mr. and Mrs. John Ahders and Lena Ehlers of Alvord, Iowa.
